International Baccalaureate Exams at the 2003 Canada-Wide Science Fair

The International Baccalaureate Organisation has approved a Draft Position Policy for the writing of International Baccalaureate Exams at the Canada -Wide Science Fair this year. The process for the implementation of the policy for the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Calgary during the week of May 10th -18th , 2003 will be as follows.

  1. When a regional science fair determines that one of their Canada-Wide Science Fair (CWSF) finalists is also a student in the International Baccalaureate Program, they should contact the IB coordinator at the finalists school and determine if the finalist would have any IB exams during the week of the CWSF.
  2. If the finalist has IB exams then the student and the parents should make a decision about whether of not the student wishes to continue to be a participant at the CWSF. Our experience with IB students writing exams at the CWSF has been positive in the past, but students must realize that there are activities at the CWSF which may detract from their studying.
  3. If the student and parent decide to attend the CWSF, then the IB coordinator should contact the IBCA office in Cardiff to obtain permission to write in the alternate site in Calgary.
  4. The IB coordinator may also inform the CWSF - IB exam coordinator of the host committee in Calgary that there may be students attending who need to write exams, but not until permission is received from IBCA should the assumption be made that approval has been given for this to occur.
  5. Once permission is received, the IB coordinator in the home school, should notify the CWSF - IB Exam coordinator of their School Name, Location, Student names, ID number and exams which need to be written. The IB-Exam coordinator will confirm that the information has been received and will notify the host committee and the judging team of any conflicts with the exam and judging schedule.
  6. IBCA will send the required exams to our writing center in Calgary, which will be Sir Winston Churchill High School (Host School) in Calgary, where the IB coordinator at the school will receive the exams for the students.
  7. The IB coordinator in the home school should send copies of the attendance sheets, examiners envelopes and any other required materials with the Science Fair delegate. These materials will be given to the CWSF - IB exam coordinator when the group arrives in Calgary.
  8. The CWSF-IB exam coordinator will set up a schedule with the students to ensure their arrival at the school for testing and for picking them up after the exams are over.
  9. The IB coordinator in the Host School will package the exams at the end of the testing period and enclose all relavent materials before sending them to the examiners.
